Amazon plans to release a new companion device for its AI-enhanced voice assistant Alexa this fall. The company's CEO, Andy Jassy, announced in an interview with Bloomberg Television that in addition to new hardware, the existing device will also receive an Alexa+ software update that will fundamentally change the capabilities of the popular voice assistant.

What will Alexa+ bring?

The new generation of Alexa will no longer just answer basic questions or play music. Instead, it will focus on assisting you more effectively with everyday tasks. Planned features include helping you book a repairman to fix your home appliances. With this move, Amazon is responding to growing competition in the AI space, which is dominated by chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Amazon sees Alexa as a long-term sustainable business model. The company hopes the innovation will boost revenue not only from subscriptions alone, but also from online shopping and other ancillary services.

For the first time, a paid version of Alexa+

One of the most significant changes is the introduction of a paid version of Alexa+. Users who want to use the latest features will have to pay an extra $19.99 per month. On the other hand, Amazon Prime members who pay an annual fee of $139 will get the update for free.

Development delays and technological challenges

Although Amazon had planned improvements to Alexa earlier, the development of the new version took longer than expected. The main reason was the complexity of incorporating advanced artificial intelligence into the software, which was not originally designed to generate instant responses.

This development shows how challenging it is to adapt existing technologies to new standards in AI. Nevertheless, Amazon believes that the investment in this project will pay off and Alexa+ will deliver a better and more sophisticated experience for users.

Cloud computing and chip supply constraints

Another significant challenge Amazon is currently addressing is chip supply constraints and capacity issues in cloud computing. Analyst Jassy said the current limits are hampering the growth of Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud division.

In this regard, the Donald Trump administration has reportedly expressed a willingness to help find a solution. Jassy appreciates that the Trump administration is listening to the voices of the business sector and is aware of the obstacles that are slowing down the development of artificial intelligence.

The future of Alexa and AI at Amazon

The changes that Amazon is preparing for Alexa show a clear strategy: to become a major player in artificial intelligence. The company is trying to catch up with the competition while keeping its ecosystem of digital services attractive to consumers.

The new Alexa+ will be a test of whether users are willing to pay for a premium version of the voice assistant and whether Amazon can reshape its technology into something that is not only useful but profitable.

The fall launch of Alexa+ may therefore be one of the key moments for the future of digital assistants and Amazon itself.
